So What Is String Theory?

Before String Theory, scientists believed that the smallest and most simple parts of the universe were points, but String Theory says that the simplest particles are actually shaped like strings. It says that all basic particles are made by the strings vibrating in different ways and patterns.

If this theory was ever proven to be true, it would be the biggest scientific breakthrough of all time. It would be the connection between quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity by accounting for all of the disagreements between them.

String Theory has five versions and there is no way to prove any of them. Another theory, called M- theory, says that the five versions of string theory are all connected by another underlying theory. It was also found that equations that make String Theory exist in ten dimensions are not accurate because M- Theory needs an extra dimension. This is why M- Theory is viewed as an eleven dimensional theory.  Almost every decade, scientists come out with new theories and new breakthroughs, and M- Theory is the most recent and the most supported.

String Theory is so complex that even scientists specialized in that area of study cannot fully comprehend it. Most people cannot even begin to understand the math behind it, what is important are the ideas, and these ideas are actually really cool!
